HOW TO PLAY

One mystery place. 6 guesses. Every guess you burn hands back distance, direction, and a proximity reading, so a wrong answer still moves you closer.

> THE LOOP_

  1. 1.A clue appears: a country outline, a flag, or a capital city name.
  2. 2.Type a country (or US state) and pick it from the autocomplete.
  3. 3.If you're wrong, you get the distance to the target, one of 8 compass directions pointing at it, and a proximity percentage.
  4. 4.Use those three signals to narrow it down. You have 6 guesses total.
  5. 5.Win or lose, the answer is revealed and you can copy a spoiler-free share grid.

> READING THE FEEDBACK_

Distance is the great-circle distance between the centroid of your guess and the centroid of the target, the same measure whether you have KM or MI selected in settings.

Direction is the initial bearing from your guess toward the target, snapped to eight points: N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW. An arrow pointing north-east means the answer sits north-east of what you just guessed.

Proximity converts that distance to a percentage against a 20,000 km ceiling. Above 80% the readout burns yellow, 40–79% cyan, below 40% red. Chase yellow.

> SCORING_

Each guess banks its own proximity percentage. Win, and you also collect 100 points per unused guess, which is why a lucky first-guess win is worth the full 600, and a sixth-guess win is worth far less than a second-guess one. Lose, and you keep only the proximity you earned. Your share grid prints the score next to the tally.

> FREQUENTLY ASKED_

How many guesses do you get in GEOPUNK?

Six. Every wrong guess comes back with the distance to the target, a compass direction, and a proximity percentage, so you can triangulate your way in. Run out of guesses and the answer is revealed.

How is the proximity percentage calculated?

It is the great-circle distance from your guess to the target, measured between centroids, expressed as a share of 20,000 km, the furthest two points on Earth can practically be. 0 km scores 100%; 20,000 km or more scores 0%.

How does GEOPUNK scoring work?

You bank the proximity percentage of every guess you make, and on a win you also collect 100 points for each guess you didn't need. A first-guess win is a perfect 600. There is no penalty beyond losing the unused-guess bonus.

When does the daily puzzle reset?

At your local midnight. The drop schedule is fixed and append-only, so drop #412 is permanently the same country for everyone, the puzzle you play in Tokyo is the puzzle someone plays in Chicago, just at a different wall-clock moment.

Is GEOPUNK free?

Yes. Every game, every daily, endless mode, and all 248 country and state dossiers are free, with no account and no sign-up. Advertising covers hosting.

Does GEOPUNK save my streak?

In your browser, on that device. There is no account to sync through, so clearing your site data or switching browsers starts you fresh.

What is hard mode?

In hard mode the shape puzzles rotate the outline to a random angle, stripping the north-up cue that makes many countries instantly recognisable. It applies to endless play; the daily always runs unrotated so everyone faces the same puzzle.

> STUCK? STUDY THE ARCHIVE_

The country archive has a dossier for every playable country, outline, flag, capital, borders, and the world maplets you click your way around the map until the shapes start sticking. Both are free and neither will spoil today's drop.
